
Many of the mainstays of the Black Company ( Croaker, One-Eye, Elmo, Otto, and Pawnbroker) are gambling in one of their countless games of tonk. They have been garrisoned in a civilized city, but the arrival of their most hated rival with a cryptic mission from their empress to kidnap a mysterious woman promises intrigue and danger. It was published in the 2010 anthology Swords and Dark Magic: The New Sword and Sorcery edited by Jonathan Strahan and Lou Anders.
